Volume 3: April – June 2014 | www.unnatiblr.org

Welcome Note
The second quarter of every year is very special for all of us, the pitter patter raindrops that bring the much needed break from the scorching sun brings music to the ears too. While a generous monsoon from nature resonates the ragas “Malhar” or “Amritavarshini”, that help to fulfil the growing needs of mankind, the resoundingly successful music fest “Utsav”, which brings the celebration of music in a classic style, alleviates the year long drought of an elaborate event dedicated to music, culture and devotion. The much appreciated monthly concerts are definitely the intermittent showers of this great art.

As always, we are working hard to make this event a stupendous success right from the conception of the program to the execution of the entire event in a meticulous manner. We strive to excel in our endeavours and always think of innovative measures to make the whole event a memorable one. Our audiences/rasikas form the “core” of this event. The program schedule, sound and stage, food, conveyance and many other measures form the “corolla” to make this exclusive event a much cherished and eagerly awaited one.

Team Unnati has been working on this event for a while now, We have 40 plus volunteers who help the cause of Unnati in general and Utsav in particular. The planning and execution of Utsav is a six month long program, while the schedule, communication with artists, printing the brochure, seeking donations and sponsorships, managing publicity etc are some of the important tasks- ensuring that both the artistes and the connoisseurs have a great time forms the most vital task.

We promise you that this year too, you will witness an extraordinary extravaganza by the best carnatic music exponents of this country.

Team Unnati welcomes you all for the Utsav 2014…

” Excellence is not being the best, doing your best.

Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We are what we repeatedly do, excellence then is not an act but is a habit— the most famous quotation by the great Greek Philosopher Aristotle holds good even today. A simple thought on what makes this 2000 year old statement valid and relevant in the fast changing modern times gives a great insight into a lot of things..

Creating a habit takes significant amount of time, effort, dedication and commitment. Be it eating healthy, staying fit, being positive and optimistic, staying committed to our goals etc, all need a lot of effort to become a habit. The Chinese culture believes in seeing/perceiving problems as opportunities to create something good, for the simple reason that it is not possible to change the past but the future can definitely be changed with the right actions and measures.

An old story which has a great message reads as follows:

A man once visited a temple under construction where he saw a sculptor making an idol of God. Suddenly he noticed a similar idol lying nearby. Surprised, he asked the sculptor, “Do you need two statues of the same idol?” “No,” said the sculptor without looking up, “We need only one, but the first one got damaged at the last stage.”

The gentleman examined the idol and found no apparent damage. “Where is the damage?” he asked. “There is a scratch on the nose of the idol.” said the sculptor, still busy with his work. “Where are you going to install the idol?” The sculptor replied that it would be installed on a pillar twenty feet high. “If the idol is that far, who is going to know that there is a scratch on the nose?” the gentleman asked.

The sculptor stopped his work, looked up at the gentleman, smiled and said, “I will know it.”

This short story has a beautiful message “the desire to excel should be exclusive of the fact whether someone appreciates it or not. Excellence is a drive from “Inside” not “Outside”, only then it becomes a habit not just a onetime act. While personal excellence is an inspiring trait to possess, team excellence comes with greater pleasure, motivation and enhanced responsibilities.

The roller coaster ride of Unnati’s journey through these years has had many exciting and harrowing times. We stood the rough and pleasant weathers with equal élan and ease, tried converting every hardship into an opportunity, appreciated the support we received with all of our hearts, always tried to excel in what we have done well and improve that which needed to be changed to reach the set benchmark.

A glimpse into the past shows many examples of our desire to be the best in what we intend to do, ” Making a difference to someone”. This is not a onetime act for us, as Team Unnati has pledged to transform the lives of as many youth as it can reach out to and make a difference to their lives and society as a whole. Hence we hold this belief of “Excellence is a habit” very close to our hearts and strive to achieve this in our journey every day.

We strongly believe in our..

Honest & genuine approach to the goals set.

Ability to improve our action plans and plan for the future.

Belief in an empathetic approach towards solutions.

Innovative approach to bring about transformation in society.

Team based time bound approach to achieve success.

This is our habit of excellence that helps us to stay focussed to our commitment and responsibility; none of our commitments/actions are complete without the help of our extended family of patrons, donors, teachers, volunteers and well-wishers. As always, we express our gratitude towards your continued support and encouragement, which is the most important element for a peoples’ movement like Unnati.

Together we shall continue on our journey and always strive for excellence.

Thank You……

” The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential… these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence. “ – Confucius

I hail from a poor family from Tumkur. My family comprises of my father who is an LIC Agent, mother a housewife and me. My father sent me to Unnati after seeing the newspaper ad and also based on a relative’s recommendation.
Basically, I was very naughty and did not have any interest in studies. I had no interest in joining Unnati initially, because I was told that I had to be in Unnati from 8 am to 8 pm . First few days were really difficult for me and I was just not able to adjust to this place. I could not think of spending 70 days in Unnati. But everything turned beautiful once the classes started and as days passed I got more and more interested in attending classes. Everyone in Unnati was living like one family. I slowly started developing interest in the classes. I did not know what life skills was before joining Unnati. This is the centre where I improved my life skills and this was the turning point of my life. The teachers are very friendly and caring. They teach us in such a way that even the dullest student is able to understand and is ready to talk in English. Unnati has really transformed my life. I am very thankful to Unnati.
